WASHINGTON – Today, Committee on House Administration Chairman Candice Miller (MI-10) participated in a Women’s History Month forum with Representative Janice Hahn (CA-44) hosted by the Library of Congress. During the forum, both members discussed their personal experiences that led them into public service, as well as their experiences serving in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“My career in public service started at an early age when, working for my family’s marina business, I led an effort to stop an excise tax on boat storage. I remember my father telling me that, ‘you can’t fight city hall.’ Well, we fought city hall and won, and that’s when I realized that I could make a difference advocating for my peers, my community, and eventually, my state.” Miller said. “I have been blessed to have a career which spans nearly four decades, where I served at the local, state, and federal levels of government. I was the first female Harrison Township Supervisor, Michigan’s first female Secretary of State, and, in 2002, I was elected to represent Michigan’s 10th Congressional District.

“In Congress, I believe that women bring a different perspective to the table. I also strongly believe that, in Congress, we don’t have just ‘women’s issues.’ All issues are women’s issues, from transportation to security, and we need more women involved in politics, from the school board and local levels to the federal levels,” said Miller. “Our accomplishments stem from different experiences, from being mothers, to caregivers, to teachers, to business owners, but women must stand on their own merits to get involved.”

Note: Chairman Candice Miller’s career in public service reflects a long history of efficiency and cost effectiveness – from her early roots on the Harrison Township Board of Trustees, to her current responsibilities representing Michigan’s 10th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Miller is currently serving her seventh term after first being elected to office in November of 2002. In addition to representing the views of Michigan’s 10th Congressional District in the Halls of Congress, Representative Miller serves as Chairman of the Committee on House Administration – currently serving as the only woman chair of a committee in the U.S. House of Representatives. She serves as Vice Chair of the House Committee on Homeland Security, and is a member of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
