Chairman of Oversight Subcommittee Questions GPO's Plans to Digitize Document Distribution and Preservation; Says Agency Can Save Taxpayers Money by Reducing Printing Operations and Improving Procurement Process

WASHINGTON – Today, Subcommittee on Oversight Chairman Phil Gingrey, R-Ga., issued the following statement after hearing testimony from Public Printer William Boarman and various publishing experts on ways GPO can reduce printing operations and better utilize emerging and existing printing and digitizing technologies:

"While I'm encouraged by the commitment we heard from Mr. Boarman to save dollars and modernize operations at the Government Printing Office, the GPO must be more aggressive in adapting to the informational needs of the 21st century.

"GPO must do a better job of utilizing existing and emerging technologies to make itself more efficient, reduce its printing operations, and improve its procurement process. Judging solely by the overwhelming reaction we've had from member offices voluntarily reducing the number of printed documents they have traditionally received from GPO, the House is obviously ready and able to work with the GPO as it modernizes its operations to cut costs and promote efficiency."
