House Passes Bill Honoring Frederick Douglass
September 10, 2012
WASHINGTON – Today, Committee on House Administration Chairman Dan Lungren, R-Calif., issued the following statement after House passage of his legislation (H.R. 6336), co-sponsored by Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, honoring the significant contributions of Frederick Douglass by adding his statue to the U.S. Capitol:
“As one of America’s most consequential advocates for the abolition of slavery, Frederick Douglass’ presence in the U.S. Capitol will honor this institution and serve as an enduring testament to this nation’s struggle for freedom and equality.
“I thank my colleagues for their support of this important measure. Specifically, I thank Delegate Norton for her support in the House and Senator Charles Schumer for his work on the companion bill in the Senate. Their persistence and cooperation made this great honor possible.”
