WASHINGTON – The Committee on House Administration Ranking Member Rodney Davis (R-Ill.) today released this statement on the resignation of Federal Elections Commissioner Caroline Hunter. Her resignation means there is no longer a quorum and the commission cannot rule on cases.
"I thank Caroline for her years of service and commitment to protecting Americans' First Amendment rights," said Davis. "The FEC is critical to enforcing our country's campaign finance laws and to providing transparency to our nation's elections; I can say without a doubt that Caroline contributed immensely to that mission.
"Ensuring the Commission has the ability to address cases before them, in a fair and open process, needs to be a top priority. However, I believe one Commissioner, who has served over a decade past her term, and frequently uses her position to speak on issues unrelated to the jurisdiction of the FEC, continues to pose a risk to that ability. Her continued presence on the commission has clearly become a toxic one and is impacting the ability of the FEC to function, which is a disservice to the American people.
"I commend the Senate for confirming Commissioner Trainor and hope Senator Schumer will work with Leader McConnell to confirm a full slate of new commissioners before the November election, including for commissioners who are past their term."
